Malamocco

Malamocco, once known as Metamauco, is one of the oldest villages in the Venetian lagoon. According to local legends, the ancient city, once overlooking the sea, was destroyed by a violent tidal wave. It is said that, on calm sea days, you can still catch a glimpse of its submerged ruins.

Today, Malamocco, reborn as Novo Metamauco, is a village of unique charm, where timeseems to stand still. Walking through its alleys immersed in the lagoon offers rare peaceand serenity. Just a short distance from the historic center of Venice, Malamocco is an
oasis of tranquility, far from the city’s chaos, where every corner tells an ancient story and the sounds of the lagoon accompany the silence.

In the heart of this village stands Relais Alberti, an emotion builder retreat that combinesmodern comfort and tradition. Here, as in ancient Venetian inns, guests find sincerehospitality in a space where relaxation and rediscovery of forgotten sensations takecenter stage. A stay at Relais Alberti is a journey through time, where you can experienceVenice in its most intimate and authentic essence.

The Albert Family

The Alberti family is history, tradition, and… courage. When Venice was struck by the most devastating plague epidemic in its history, not even Malamocco, the tranquil village of the Venetian lagoon, was safe. The wealthy patrician Pietro Cesare Alberti (1608-1655), born and raised in the homes that now form Relais Alberti, was forced to flee to escape certain death.

A journey that would mark history and take him from the calm lagoon currents to the stormy ocean, ultimately landing in the promised land: the Americas. Pietro Alberti settled in what would become New York, thus becoming the first of millions of Italian-Americans who would later form a vital part of American culture.

With the participation and support of the National Italian American Foundation, June 2 is commemorated as “Pietro Alberti Day” in New York: a special day for the entire Italian community in America, where Italians remember their origins in a moment of joy and conviviality.

A stone slab in Battery Park, at the so-called Bowling Green, marks Pietro’slanding point; a place of gathering and commemoration that touches the heart of theMotherland.

The Inscription:
“Peter Caesar Alberti first italian settler landed in N.Y. June 2, 1635 through the efforts of John N. La Corte founder of the Italian Historical Society of America – June 2, has been proclaimed Alberti day”
